　　为了更好地体现现代高等教育英语教学的特点和要求，真正做到 以学生为主体、适应 课堂教学和自主学习相结合的特点，本套教材在以下方面下了一些功夫：
　　（1）紧密结合 教学大纲的要求和课堂教学实际。编写队伍全部都是来自教学第一线的教学骨干，充分地把各位编者的教学经验融入到教材中，特别是在选编课文时，注重选编 短小精悍的短文，让师生在一个教学单位时间内能够完成一个相对完整的内容。
　　（2）选材新颖。无论是交际技能，还是课文学习，抑或是写作训练，从形式到内容，编者都注重选择最新的语料，并努力使英语学习寓于趣味性、娱乐性之中，以使得课堂教学和课后自学都不会枯燥乏味。
　　（3）注重基础训练。各册内容特别注重基本知识和基本技能的训练，设计了数量可观的练习；同时，考虑到部分学生入学时需要加强英语基础知识的学习，本套教材特别编写了《预备教程》，以供有需要的班级和学生在语音和基础语法方面加强复习和练习。
　　（4）编排 形式科学。本套教材的主体部分按照交际技能、课文学习、综合练习和写作训练进行编排，努力做到在听、说、读、写、译五个方面提高学习者的英语水平。
　　（5）强调自主学习的特点。 现代教育强调“教师为主导、学生为主体、学生自主学习”的理念；同时，高中毕业后进入高等院校继续学习的学生对 母语已经掌握得比较好了，而有些学生英语 语感相对较差。为此，我们特别编写了《 基础英语语法》，以使英语学习者更好地利用母语优势。
　　（6）结合 现代教育技术和利用辅助 教学手段。与纸质教材配套，我们充分利用了 现代计算机和 多媒体技术制作了供学生使用的 多媒体课件和供教师使用的课堂教学课件，以使得课堂教学和课后自学都更加直观和有趣。

这次修订主要遵循以下四条原则：
1.维持原书基本框架。《大学英语教程》(第4册)(修订本)仍为传统精读课本，沿用以课文为中心，给织言学习之基本方法。每课内容亦与原书大致相同，仍分课文、练习、语法三大部分，所附小诗仍供学生自学欣赏，无需教师课堂上正式处理；
2.尽量在总体目标上以及语言项目、词汇范围与练习方式上使教材体现教委大纲规定之要求。希望基本上完成精读课作为一种课型之任务；
3.刷新教材内容，使之更生动、更多样、更实用；
4.努力加强教材之计划性与科学性，提高教材总体格调，增加信息量，更好地使语言与文化结合在一起。
以上几条，仅为编者主观愿望。实际情况，限于编者水平，各种错误缺点仍难避免。因此我们衷心希望使用《大学英语教程》(第4册)(修订本)诸君能不吝赐教，予以指正。此外，各类练习总量偏多，教师必须根据选择使用，这点亦请使用者特别注意。

Introduction:
The main body of the article that deals with the animal kingdom is fascinating reading —— informative and enlightening. It presents an approach to understanding the seerets of science that is worthy of emulation and would serve as an excellent model for writers of science textbooks. Such an approach would bring the material to life for students.
However, the last two paragraphs seem to be rather arbitrary. It is of course an interesting idea that like animals, all human institutions also have their optimum size and the failure of the "People's Commune" in China seemed to illustrate the point. But the author has neither demonstrated any connection between his discussion of the size of animals and the size of human institutions, nor presented any reason why such an analogy would hold. By so carelessly connecting these two very different topics, he has unwittingly demonstrated the danger of making inferences from the biological to the social world, a not uncom- mon occurrence among natural scientists and others.

本书为北京外国语大学杨立民、徐克容等老师所编《大学英语教程》（COLLEGE ENGLISH）第四册修订本的教师手册，主要供教师在教学中参考使用。
修订本教师手册大致保留了原书框架，但内容有很大变动。每课增加了背景介绍，统一了体例，补充了练习的答案，并对课文的讲解部分作了相当大的整理与修改。
本书课文讲解部分有半数以上根据梅仁毅、林克美、徐克容、朱炳和、李贺、杜学增、张玉林、陈亚平等系内同仁所做教案写成，其中梅仁毅老师贡献尤大；本书编写期间，还曾得到加拿大专家Ruth Gamberg的大力协助，在此一并表示深切的谢意。
